A rare and fine head of the Buddha with serene expression and well-preserved crisp features of the face; sweeping brow arch and half-open downcast eyes; aquiline nose above sensitively-modelled lips and a full chin; crisply-detailed ears with bold, coiled haircurls surmounted by a bun-shaped topknot; 2nd/3rd century; Gandhara; stucco; Afghanistan. 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) high.
